The Old Fire Station in Midleton, which was left idle for over 10 years, was a prominent landmark in Midleton for over 60 years. In 2013 the voluntary group, Midleton My Place examined the potential redevelopment of the derelict fire station for use as a youth centre and community resource centre. The Midleton My Place group come together in the late 90's / early 2000's with a view to offering support to young people from the area and to promote mental health awareness. The design provides for a spacious and light filled multi-purpose community and youth facility, whilst achieving a sustainable and economically viable model resulting in low running and maintenance costs. An early objective was to aim for compliance with the Passive Haus, EnerPHit standard for renovation projects with the building achieving an A3 Building Energy Rating. The current high levels of community use and ongoing engagement is clear evidence of the success of this community led project. This development also highlights the importance of the sustainable adaptive reuse of existing building stock for local communities. The project was included as a finalist in the Design category of the 2016 SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards.
