The clients wished to build a modern contemporary family dwelling, full of light and one that would take full advantage of the mature surroundings. The site and its environs assisted in the development of a brief, when existing features and views gently guided the design in a certain direction. Careful orientation of the layout of all internal spaces ensured that the main living spaces would benefit from natural light throughout the day. The main kitchen/ dining/ living areas of the house are located along an east-west axis, following the movement of the sun from early morning to late evening. With the inclusion of large amounts of glazing along the southern façade, we were able to optimise the solar gain to the main living areas in the house. Any possible overheating issues were addressed with the inclusion of a deep overhang from the first floor above, as well as a deep soffit on the single storey element to the front of the house. These elements also assisted in blurring the lines between inside and outside, which was requested by the clients at an early stage. High level glazing to the main living space frames the mature trees and sky, providing an ever-changing borrowed canvas throughout the year. The copper cladding on the 2-storey element speaks to the nearby colours of nature and helps ground the house to its surroundings.
